History
The BeginningsFormed in 2004, the early days of Little Roots were spent clearing and preparing the site for the operational opening in 2006. In 2007, with the assistance of other childrens organisations, we started our association with local schools to promote our values. Set in an existing council owned allotment site the early years were more developmental and less participatory with numbers of visitors not reaching into the 100's. The securing for the funding of our co-ordinator in 2009 saw the visitor numbers grow significantly to close on 1000 and has continued to grow year on year. |
Since the onset of the Covid 19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns all activity was ceased in March 2020.
Due to this we were unable to meet the commitments made to the National Lottery on visitors and clubs and this led to the redundancy of the allotment co-ordinator after 12 years of service. The site is being maintained by a leading professional landscaping company until the planned, full re-opening of the site in early spring 2022. |
Education and Facilities
Little roots is primarily designed as a fun, hands on, open air classroom. With a mixture of blended activities, we aim to provide an engaging activity experience that also inspires the children to become more aware of healthy eating, diet and nutrition. At the same time balancing this with ecological awareness, green issues and the fun elements of grow-your-own.
The primary activities centre around the need to educate our children for their health and well-being in the future. Giving them a good knowledge in the benefits of healthy eating, but mixing this with physical activities that promote exercise through fun.
"Thank you for helping me dig for worms. I found a worm and it was very slimy. I enjoyed planting the onions, it was fun. I loved tasting the gooseberries and raspberries although my favourite was the strawberries. I loved finding snails, I found 2" |
The site is fully enclosed within a larger allotment complex. We have a dedicated open clasroom for all seated (and of course, weather related) activities.
e also have large covered growing areas should the rain fall.
For the younger groups we also have sandpits, toys and smaller tools to help them feel involved.
